I’ve never much cared for the song “The Little Drummer Boy,” but this year it has become my favorite. Our home teacher shared with us why it is his favorite, and after listening more closely to the words, it has become one of my favorites as well. In the past, I didn’t like the addition of a drummer boy, who was clearly not part of the original story, but now I understand I wasn’t there either, and the little drummer boy represents me. One of my favorite lines is, “I have no gift to bring that’s fit to give a king.” This represents the many ways that I fall short in my efforts to be like Christ, but a line later in the song, “I played my best for him,” reminds us all that we aren’t required to be perfect and that when we give our best, that is enough.
