Many of us are far from being mothers, or think we are, that is. I remember growing up and thinking to myself, “Eh, I’ll wait until I’m a mom to learn that skill”. My goal seemed so far away, but now here I am… 23-years-old and two kids later, and it’s almost as if I only blinked my eyes.
You know that scripture that says, “Eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die”? Well, that’s kind of how I lived my life in regards to motherhood. I figured that when the time came to be a mom that I would be a natural, so why did I need to practice beforehand? I went to bed after midnight on most nights, slept in like there was no tomorrow, and didn’t learn how to cook, do the dishes, or complete a load of laundry. The only thing that I knew was that I liked babies! If only I figured out there is so much more to motherhood than liking babies…
Whether you decide to become a mother or not, honing these skills at a young age will help you so much in life!! Take it from me, who is learning all of this after the fact! And who knows, maybe you’ll actually grow to like some of these things!? None of your effort is ever wasted, girls. Remember that!
I challenge each of you to look at one skill that your mother has (one that you may not be too fond of), and try to develop it within yourself! I know that as you do this, you will begin to feel more purposeful, and more prepared for the years to come! Now get to it!
